Metatransformer is building The Mesh, an open-source federated protocol for AI agent infrastructure designed to counter centralized AI capture. The Mesh is a sovereign mesh operating system for AI-native organizations: self-hosted, model-agnostic, and architecturally committed to the principle that AI should amplify human capability rather than replace human judgment.

Founded by Nick Bryant — a 23-year engineering veteran whose career began at NASA's Intelligent Robotics Group and spans private equity fund management, AI infrastructure, and open-source development — Metatransformer emerged from building an AI operating system for a private equity fund that replaced $15,000/month in SaaS costs with $250/month of mesh infrastructure. The Mesh protocol uses DIDs for agent identity, UCANs for capability-based permissions, and CRDTs for distributed state management, with federation enabling cross-organization agent coordination. The project is MIT-licensed and actively developed at github.com/Metatransformer/the-mesh.
